‘The Milkwood Permaculture Living Handbook’ by Kirsten Bradley

Milkwood began after Kirsten Bradley and Nick Ritar decided to enact a dream ‘to build a tiny house and grow some food’. Their starting point was on their family farm in NSW in 2007 and it has not only evolved but their home has moved south, now residing in Talune/Cygnet, Tasmania.

Milkwood means a combination of softness and strength, sustenance and shelter – and reflects their commitment to permaculture principles. Kirsten and Nick have created a permaculture farm-school gathering students and teachers alike from around the world. This makes them well versed, practical educators and they give us their extensive knowledge in Milkwood Permaculture Living Handbook – their third book.

A most impressive guide to create food resilience in homes and communities.

Permaculture is a ‘thinking system’ to create a permanent regenerative culture using natural systems and indigenous knowledge, together to create a no-waste outcome. “It is a design system for creating regenerative farms, communities and landscapes that are interconnected and sustainable.” says Kirsten.

But where do you start? Milkwood is an extensive handbook for the beginner through to the experienced. We benefit from their sixteen years’ experience, gleaned from a vast array of teachers. They wisely counsel their students with practical guidance and advise against the rash ‘have it all and do it now’ mindset that often leads to failures. Instead, they suggest to ‘begin right where you are’ and Milkwood Permaculture Living Handbook is a perfect place to start.

One chapter covers preserving food for ‘out of season’ supplies and ensuring food security, but a personal favourite is the various sauerkraut recipes – who knew so many options existed! You can create a garden from rain run-off surfaces or make an apple scrap vinegar. Start a seed bank or make your own probiotic drinks. This book offers sound, practical ideas for your own household and your immediate community.

It’s an idyllic life but Milkwood allows you to begin in small but significant ways.

I read wide and vast. Non-fiction, fiction and across the ages. I believe book reviews and book clubs are opportunities for the very best bookish communication.
