Mrs Blackwell’s Victorian Market Carts

Sell your wares in the heart of Greytown’s busy retail village

Our stunning market carts evoke the feeling of quaint European markets where vendors sell anything from arts and crafts to food and drinks. They fit right in with Greytown’s famous Victorian architecture, which I’ve been told looks straight out of a movie.

Rent a cart and set up shop right next to Mrs Blackwell’s Village Bookshop — just a stone’s throw from the village square — where up to 1,000 visitors pass by every day in the summer months.

Our Victorian market carts are ideal for small businesses or big dreamers that might not have their own storefront yet. You’ll get invaluable exposure to the South Wairarapa market as you build your brand and get people talking about your products.

About the carts

We’ve got three carts available from 10am to 4pm* every day.

The smallest cart measures 92 x 197 cm; the other two are a few centimetres longer and/or wider. They’re large, solid carts with plenty of space to display your stock, but the lever system and large wheels make them surprisingly easy to move. Feel free to move them in and out of the sun throughout the day!

Each cart comes with lockable storage underneath to keep all your extra stock. It will be safe and secure all day.

These are beautiful carts, so I ask that you don’t use any adhesives, screws, or nails on them.

You’ll have access to the bookshop’s power supply throughout the day, but you’ll need to bring your own extension cord. The bookshop won’t be able to take payments for you, so you’ll need to bring your own resources to manage cash and card sales.

Rental rates

$75 + gst per day, and every 10th rental is free.

Payment must be made at least five days before your rental date. If you’re booking multiple dates in December or July, a non-refundable 25% deposit is required at the time of booking.

Rental fees are non-refundable, but you can transfer your payment to another available date in the case of bad weather or government issued changes to gathering.

You’ll have access to the cart from 9:45am; if you’d like to arrive earlier, please let us know in advance and we’ll do our best to accomodate your request. You’ll need to be fully packed up by 4pm. If you’ve booked a cart for consecutive days, you’re welcome to leave goods in the secure storage underneath the carts at your own risk.

Trading licences

You can sell from our carts without a license as long as you stay within the bookshop’s boundary line.

If you’ve got a Hawkers Licence from the South Wairarapa District Council, you can take the cart into the square to get that quintessential European market feel. I ask that you don’t take the carts beyond the square, though.

Wet weather

The bookshop has a sheltered area that you can trade from in light rain.

If New Zealand’s infamous heavy rain or high winds kick in, we’ll transfer your rental fee to another available date.

Promotion

We’ll promote your business on the blackboard outside the bookshop in the week leading up to your rental date. If we’re feeling artistic, we might even draw a cute picture!

If you send us good quality photos of your work or products, we’ll also promote your business through our Instagram stories.

Parking

Parking in Greytown is notoriously hard to come by for visitors, so please park off Main Street during the day.

There are two car parks behind the shop that you can use to unpack your goods, but you’ll need to move your vehicle once you’ve set up. We recommend parking on McMaster Street, East Street or in the free public parking lot opposite Fresh Choice.
